Condition: Autism spectrum disorder (diagnosed at age 3)
Duration of illness: 5 years

The Challenge

An 8-year-old girl was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 3. Over the following five years, her parents pursued every intervention they could find; behavioral therapies, occupational and speech therapy, detoxification protocols, homeopathy, antiparasitic treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and heavy metal chelation, among others. While each approach brought some degree of improvement, none offered consistent or lasting change.

The Discovery

One winter, shortly after the central heating system was turned on, the patient’s mother noticed an increase in her daughter’s sensory-seeking behaviors. At the same time, she experienced a worsening of her own fatigue. Concerned, she hired an indoor environmental professional to assess the home. The inspection revealed significant mold growth throughout the property.

Testing & Findings

Blood serum mycotoxin antibody testing through MyMycoLab revealed elevated IgE antibody levels across multiple mycotoxins, indicating active environmental exposure. The results demonstrated that the child’s immune system was actively responding to mycotoxin exposure from the contaminated home.

Treatment & Outcome

The home was professionally remediated. The child then began treatment following Dr. Campbell’s paradigm.

The improvements came in stages. Initially, she demonstrated increased eye contact, followed by an improved ability to listen to and follow multi-step directions. Self-stimulatory behaviors, mood swings, and coordination all showed notable improvement. She no longer experienced enuresis and began waking more refreshed.

After six weeks, her parents reported finally “seeing glimmers” of their daughter again.

One of the most meaningful milestones came when she started engaging in conversations with family and peers with a level of ease not previously observed. A particularly joyful moment for her parents was when she said “I love you” for the first time.

By the end of treatment, she was eating an increasingly varied diet, exploring new activities, and inviting new friends over to play. Post-treatment IgE results showed a significant reduction in antibody levels across all 14 mycotoxins.

The Bigger Picture

The prevalence of ASD is increasing, with 1 in 31 children now impacted according to the CDC. A published study comparing 172 children diagnosed with ASD to 61 controls revealed statistically significant differences in mycotoxin-specific antibody levels between the two groups. Children in the ASD cohort exhibited markedly elevated antibody levels directed against various mycotoxins, suggesting a possible immunological response to environmental mycotoxin exposure.

Numerous clinical case reports have documented improvement in behavioral and neurological symptoms following targeted treatment to reduce mycotoxin burden in affected children.
